Aventura, the urban bachata group from the Bronx that has re-energized the tropical music scene, was the big winner at the 2010 Billboard Latin Music Awards, snaring nine trophies, including Latin album and digital album of the year for “The Last” (Premium).

The awards, presented by State Farm in association with T-Mobile, aired live April 29 on Telemundo from Coliseo de Puerto Rico Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan and featured 14 performances by more than 20 acts. It marked the first time in its 21-year history that the awards show, seen in nearly 50 countries, had been held outside the continental United States.

Aventura’s nine wins also included the newly created Latin artist of the year award, which combines achievements on both the Top Latin Albums sales chart and Hot Latin Songs airplay chart. Tito “El Bambino” was the second-most-honored artist with seven awards, including hot Latin song male artist of the year and-for his hit single “El Amor” (Siente/Universal)-hot Latin song and Latin digital download of the year.

Luis Fonsi and Wisin & Yandel each received three awards. They included Latin pop album solo artist of the year for Fonsi, who records for Universal Music Latino, and Latin rhythm album of the year for Wisin & Yandel’s “La Revolución” (Machete).

The winner of the inaugural new Latin artist of the year award was Fonovisa’s Larry Hernández, whose brand of in-your-face narcocorridos found acceptance at both retail and radio. The award for crossover artist of the year, a new category created in recognition of mainstream tracks that play heavily on Spanish-language formats, went to the Black Eyed Peas.

Although this year’s awards cut across a broad swath of genres and styles, they were remarkable for a prevalence of winners with music that blended urban and pop sensibilities in a mix that transcended radio formats and nationalities. “El Amor,” for example, written by “El Bambino” with Joan Ortiz, played on urban, tropical and pop formats across the country, as did songs by Aventura and even by pop artists like Fonsi.

Cross-pollination has also been a key part of the strategy at Universal Music Latin Entertainment, which dominated the label awards. UMLE took home top Latin albums label of the year, while UMLE’s pop imprint, Universal Music Latino, won the hot Latin songs label of the year award and its tropical/urban imprint, Machete, won Latin rhythm airplay label of the year.

UMLE’s regional Mexican imprint, Disa, won regional Mexican airplay label of the year. UMLE imprints, which also won albums label of the year awards in the Latin pop, regional Mexican and Latin rhythm genres, work closely with one another, often mixing and matching artists across Latin genres. Sony Music Latin dominated the tropical category, winning the airplay label and albums label awards.

For the third year in a row, Espinoza Paz won the songwriter of the year award, while for the second consecutive year, Armando Avila and Arpa Musical won producer and publisher of the year awards, respectively. Sony/ATV Music Publishing took home this year’s publishing corporation of the year award.

Awards for labels and publishers were handed out April 28 during the Billboard Bash, which also featured performances by finalists including Flex, Diana Reyes and Tercer Cielo.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards honor the most popular albums, songs and performers in Latin music, as determined by sales and radio airplay data used to compile Billboard’s weekly charts during the one-year period of Feb. 7, 2009-Jan. 30, 2010.

Finalists, and the eventual winners, are determined by the performance of new recordings on Billboard’s sales charts including Top Latin Albums and airplay charts including Hot Latin Songs. Album categories were limited to titles that didn’t appear before the Nov. 8, 2008, issue and excluded finalists from the prior year’s awards.

A Billboard editorial committee decided the recipients of the Spirit of Hope and Lifetime Achievement Awards, which were given this year to Marc Anthony and Mexican icons Los Temerarios, respectively (Billboard, April 24).

El colombiano regresa con nuevo disco

Tras una larga ausencia de los estudios de grabación, Carlos Vives regresa con un nuevo disco titulado Clásicos de la Provincia II, que como en la primera edición publicada en 1993, retoma viejas composiciones que forman parte de la tradición oral del Caribe colombiano.

El cantante colombiano dijo al periódico El Tiempo que con este nuevo material discográfico, que es la segunda parte de Clásicos de la Provincia, siente cumplir con las peticiones que por muchos años le hicieron sus seguidores.

Además, en el álbum Vives rinde homenaje a artistas clásicos del vallenato como Carlos Huertas, Luis Enrique Martínez y Wicho Sánchez, según difundió en su edición en línea El Informador.

El primer corte promocional del disco lleva por título Las mujeres y es un tema del compositor colombiano Carlos Huerta, autor de la popular canción El cantor de Fonseca.

“Me habría gustado conocer a Carlos Huertas, un artista con el que me siento identificado. Huertas fue un compositor nacido en Dibuya pero más conocido como El Cantor de Fonseca por el amor especial que ese pueblo del departamento de La Guajira le profesó”, señaló el músico, informó DPA.

El primer sencillo de Clásicos de la provincia II empezó a sonar hoy en todas las emisoras de Colombia y saldrá al mercado el próximo 30 de septiembre.

Acompañada de un moderno cuerpo de baile abrió la reina de la radio, Paulina Rubio el escenario de Premios Juventud. La cantante mexicana alborotó la audiencia con una nueva versión de su éxito “Causa y efecto”, primer corte de su álbum Gran City Pop que ha prevalecido durante cinco semanas consecutivas NUMERO UNO en las carteleras de Billboard y que fuera certificado recientemente disco de Platino.

El acostumbrado romanticismo de Luis Fonsi hizo delirar a los presentes. El cantautor puertorriqueño estrenó como primicia en la televisión internacional su nuevo sencillo “Llueve por dentro”, tema que concluyó con una caída de lluvia en pleno escenario. Fonsi, el artista con mayor número de nominaciones en la historia de Premios Juventud, logra un record al sumarse DIEZ estatuillas en una sola noche. Tras una larga ausencia del ámbito musical Alicia Villarreal regresó a las tablas para entrenar su nuevo éxito “Caso perdido”, sencillo promocional de su nueva producción discográfica La Jefa.

Por su lado, el cantante y compositor mexicano Cristian Castro seleccionó para entregar a su público un medley compuesto por su éxito “El culpable soy yo” y el estreno mundial de “Por la espalda”, sencillo de su más reciente producción discográfica El Culpable Soy Yo.

Con “Te amo”, sencillo que lideró las carteleras de la revista Billboard debutó en el escenario de Premios Juventud el cantante panameño Makano quien durante su presentación estuvo acompañado de Greidys Gil, Nuestra Belleza Latina.

Otros ganadores fueron el cantautor español Enrique Iglesias quien ganó un premioen la categoría Música: Mi Concierto Favorito y Jenni Rivera que fuepremiada como Mi Artista Regional Mexicano.

La ceremonia, además, se engalanó con la presencia de la cantante argentino-española Chenoa, la cantautora colombiana Fanny Lú, y los reggaetoneros puertorriqueños Franco El Gorila y Miguelito quienes tuvieron a cargo presentadores especiales para anunciar importantes galardones.

Los ganadores de Premios Juventud, que honraron a cantantes, músicos, estrellas de cine, figuras del deporte, íconos de la moda y la cultura popular,  fueron seleccionados por la votación de la juventud hispana de Estados Unidos.

La música de Menudo a los escenarios

El grupo Menudo inspiró grandes sentimientos entre miles de fans que corearon sus canciones en la década de los ochenta, después de varios años regresan a los escenarios, pero caracterizados en un musical.

Exitos musicales que se llevarán a escena

La vida de los chicos que conformaron Menudo será llevada a los escenarios teatrales en el próximo mes de noviembre, dijo el puertorriqueño Edgardo Díaz a través de sus representantes de Perfec Partner, según informó la agencia EFE.

El lugar que será el primer testigo de esta puesta en escena es Caracas, Venezuela, donde se estrenará la primer obra teatral inspirada en la impactante carrera musical que varios chicos puertorriqueños dieron vida hace 32 años.

El creador de la banda también comentó que el musical costará millones de dólares, ya que se invertirá mucho dinero en arreglos musicales, coreografía, escenografía, libreto, montaje y dirección.

Y aunque todavía no se tiene un nombre específico para la obra, ya comenzó el casting en diferentes países para seleccionar a los mejores actores que darán vida a Ricky Martin, Xavier Serbiá, Charlie Massó, Johnny Lozada,  y el resto de la agrupación.

Edgardo Díaz se encuentra muy animado por este proyecto y comentó que “es una gran emoción desarrollar una producción de esta magnitud, como en los mejores tiempos de Menudo”, informó EFE.

Las canciones de Menudo marcaron una época, y claro que escoger las indicadas para estas representaciones será un reto para Díaz, ante lo cual agregó “no ha sido fácil hacer la selección…Hemos tratado de incluir la mayor cantidad de éxitos, sobre todo de esos primeros años que ayudaron a catapultar al grupo como un fenómeno musical”.

El año 2010 será cuando los fans de aquella época, y las nuevas generaciones, podrán disfrutar del espectáculo ya que se hará una gira mundial que llevará al musical por  algunos países como México, Estados Unidos, Brasil, Perú, y PuertoRico, tierra natal de la agrupación.

LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson was eulogized in words and song Tuesday by an all-star list of musicians, athletes and other celebrities during a mournful ceremony in downtown Los Angeles, with the most poignant moment delivered by his sobbing 11-year-old daughter.

“I just want to say ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you can ever imagine. And I just wanted to say I love him so much,” Paris-Michael Jackson said before almost collapsing in the arms of her aunt Janet Jackson.

Watched by millions around the world, the memorial struck a tone more spiritual than spectacular Tuesday, opening with a church choir serenading his golden casket and continuing with somber speeches and gospel-infused musical performances.

The Rev. Lucious W. Smith of the Friendship Baptist Church in Pasadena gave the greeting on the same stage where Jackson had been rehearsing for a concert series in the days before his June 25 death at age 50. Then Mariah Carey sang the opening performance with a sweet rendition of the Jackson 5 ballad “I’ll Be There,” a duet with Trey Lorenz.

“We come together and we remember the time,” said Smith, riffing on one of Jackson’s lyrics. “As long as we remember him, he will always be there to comfort us.”

Millions of fans around the world gathered at odd hours to watch the ceremony, which was broadcast by the major TV networks and cable channels from Tokyo to Paris to New York and streamed everywhere online in one of the biggest celebrity send-offs ever seen.

Among those who saluted Jackson were Motown music mogul Berry Gordy Jr., Brooke Shields, the Rev. Al Sharpton and basketball greats Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant. Jennifer Hudson sang Jackson’s hit “Will You Be There” and John Mayer played guitar on a whisper-light rendition of “Human Nature.”

“This is a moment that I wished I didn’t live to see,” Stevie Wonder said before his performance. Usher broke down in tears after singing “Gone Too Soon.”

Although the event was billed as a celebration, some speakers took the occasion to come to the defense of Jackson, whose life was marked as much by criticism and scorn as scintillating talent.

Gordy said that despite what he called “some sad times and maybe some questionable decisions on his part,” the title King of Pop wasn’t good enough for Jackson. “I think he is simply the greatest entertainer that ever lived,” Gordy said.

Emotions rose when Sharpton delivered a fiery eulogy highlighting all the barriers Jackson broke and the troubles he faced. “Every time he got knocked down, he got back up,” Sharpton said, and the applauding crowd jumped to its feet.

Sharpton rode the moment, building to a crescendo. “There wasn’t nothing strange about your daddy,” he said later, addressing Jackson’s three children in the front row. “It was strange what your daddy had to deal with!” After he left the stage, chants of “Mi-chael! Mi-chael!” filled the arena.

The ceremony wrapped up with group performances of “We Are the World” and “Heal the World” sung by Lionel Richie, Hudson and Jackson family members — including his children — before a backdrop of symbols of religions from around the world. They were joined onstage by children in white and several other people who had participated in the ceremony. Then members of Jackson’s family took the stage to thank the crowd and share their own thoughts, barely able to hide their emotion as they hugged in the ceremony’s final moments.

An estimated 20,000 people were in the Staples Center as Jackson’s flower-draped casket was brought to the venue in a motorcade under law enforcement escort. Those who gathered constituted a visual representation of Jackson’s life: black, white and everything in between, wearing fedoras and African headdresses, sequins and surgical masks.

Fans with a ticket wore gold wristbands and picked up a metallic gold program guide on their way in. Acting as pallbearers, Jackson’s brothers each wore a gold necktie and, in a touch borrowed from their brother, a single spangly white glove and sunglasses.

Brother Jermaine Jackson took the stage and sang the standard “Smile” as he fought back tears.

Jackson’s hearse had been part of a motorcade that smoothly whisked his body 10 miles across closed freeways from a private service at a Hollywood Hills cemetery to his public memorial and awaiting fans.

The traffic snarls and logistical nightmares that had been feared by police and city officials did not materialize. Traffic was actually considered by police to be lighter than normal.

“I think people got the message to stay home,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Miguel Luevano.

Deputy Police Chief Sergio Diaz, operations chief for the event, said authorities had expected a crowd of 250,000. Besides reporters and those with tickets to the memorial service, the crowd around the Staples Center perimeter numbered only about 1,000, he said.

Outside the Staples Center, Claudia Hernandez, 29, said she loved Jackson’s music as a girl growing up in Mexico. Now a day-care teaching assistant in Los Angeles, Hernandez said she cried watching TV coverage of his death.

“I’m trying to hold in my emotions,” said Hernandez, wearing a wristband to allow her admittance to the service and holding a framed photograph of Jackson. “I know right now he’s teaching the angels to dance.”

More than 1.6 million people registered for the lottery for free tickets to Jackson’s memorial. A total of 8,750 were chosen to receive two tickets each.

“There are certain people in our popular culture that just capture people’s imaginations. And in death, they become even larger,” President Barack Obama told CBS while in Moscow. “Now, I have to admit that it’s also fed by a 24/7 media that is insatiable.”

The city of Los Angeles set up a Web site Tuesday to allow fans to contribute money to help the city pay for his Staples Center memorial service. Mayoral spokesman Matt Szabo estimated the service will cost $1.5 million to $4 million.

It was not clear what will happen to Jackson’s body. The Forest Lawn Memorial Park Hollywood Hills cemetery is the final resting place for such stars as Bette Davis, Andy Gibb, Freddie Prinze, Liberace and recently deceased David Carradine and Ed McMahon.

Jermaine Jackson has expressed a desire to have him buried someday at Neverland, his estate in Southern California.

Midway during the memorial service, police Officer April Harding told the media gathered at the gates of Forest Lawn to disperse. Asked if Jackson’s body was going to be returned to the cemetery after the memorial, she replied: “His body is not going to be returned here.” She did not say where it would be taken

Ricky Martin confesó que Michael Jackson fue su maestro y que a pesar de que nadie podrá reemplazarlo, seguirá viviendo a través de su legado.

“Estoy muy triste. Nadie lo podrá reemplazar.  Pero estoy seguro que la  luz que nos regaló en los escenarios seguirá iluminando a tod

os aquellos que lo vimos como lo que fue y siempre será, un gran maestro, pura inspiración musical”, dijo el puertorriqueño.

Shakira habló sobre los sentimientos que la invadieron al conocer la noticia. “Michael Jackson fue el rey de la genialidad artística, del baile, de la innovación y la fantasía. Re invento el Pop y una forma nueva de articular la música con imágenes que perduraran siempre. Por su calidad de voz Frank Sinatra lo definió como “El Único Cantante que he visto mejor que yo” Con su muerte, se va el Rey de la música pop y nace una leyenda hasta el final de los tiempos. Mis profundos respetos a su familia, seguidores y seres queridos”, dijo la colombiana.

Gloria Estefan también mostró su tristeza, sin dejar de reconocer la enorme influencia que dejó el llamado Rey del pop sobre el mundo.

“Las dos grandes perdidas que hemos sentido hoy solo se puede balancear con las cosas bellas que dejaron atrás en nuestro mundo. Farrah Fawcett y Michael Jackson vivirán siempre en mi corazón como inolvidables y eternos”, indicó Gloria.

Luis Fonsi fue uno de esos millones de seres humanos que creció escuchando y viendo a Jackson, sus canciones, sus movimientos en escena, son algo que jamás olvidará.

“Hoy perdimos al artista más importante de los últimos tiempos, al artista más importante de mi generación. El cambió para siempre el género pop y nos ha influenciado a todos. Su música, sus bailes y su energía se quedara con nosotros para siempre.” Recordó Fonsi.

También el regional mexicano extendió sus condolencias. José Ángel Medina, líder de Patrulla 81 fue contemporáneo de Michael, vivió a la distancia sus logros y escándalos.

“Se siente feo perder un artista tan grande a nivel mundial, éramos contemporáneos, viví toda su historia, y lo sentí de corazón, es una gran perdida para el medio artístico. Con Ben lo conocí y siempre ha sido inolvidable para mí”, declaró.

Para Khriz del dúo Angel & Khriz, Michael Jackson fue su ídolo y a pesar de la muerte, lo seguirá siendo.

“Yo personalmente me sabía todas sus rutinas de baile y lo admiraba mucho ya que tenia un sonido muy particular siento mucho su muerte y siempre seré su fanático”, comentó.

Wisin y Yandel, acaban de filmar el video de “Abusadora” en el desierto, bajo temperaturas de 120°F / 49°C. “Abusadora” ya se está escuchando en la radio y se estrenará en la televisión y en el Internet el 26 de mayo, el mismo día que sale a la venta “La Revolución”, el nuevo álbum del dúo de la historia.

El video de “Abusadora” fue dirigido por el Director de Cine Jessy Terrero en “Death Valley”, conocido como el desierto mas árido y cálido de Norte América (parte del Desierto Mojave, en la frontera entre los estados de Nevada y California).
